I regularly give public lectures, expert briefings, and workshops for universities, schools, civil society organizations, public agencies, and the broader public. My talks draw on my research on civil war, nonviolent resistance, and electoral conflict, and can be tailored to both specialist and general audiences. If you would like me to speak at your event, please get in touch.

How to Boycott an Election

Election boycotts are often dismissed as a futile gesture that hands the incumbent an easy victory. Based on my ongoing book project, this talk examines under what conditions opposition actors boycott elections, how they use boycotts strategically to resist the regime-strengthening functions of elections, and when boycotts succeed in winning concessions.

Workshop

Unpacking Academic Writing: From Research to Publication

A practical guide for PhD candidates and early-career scholars on moving from research to published article, taking participants step by step through the writing, submission, revision, and proof stages of the publication process. Drawing on more than a decade of professional writing experience and extensive insights from publishing, peer reviewing, and supervising, the workshop demystifies common hurdles and provides concrete, actionable strategies for improving your academic writing and better communicating your research. Participants leave with a clearer sense of how to craft a strong, publishable manuscript, respond effectively to editors and reviewers, and manage the often opaque journey from first draft to final publication. I have previously held the workshop at the University of Amsterdam, Bilkent University in Ankara, Uppsala University, the Peace Research in Sweden Network, and the CRS Emerging Scholars Initiative.
